MF Hussain Passes away


New Delhi, June 9: Renowned artist MF Husain, India’s best contemporary painter has died at an age of 95 due to heart attack at Royal Brompton hospital in London on Thursday. He was admitted only two days ago for fluid retention in his lungs, and but had otherwise been in good condition.

At 95, he was active. He died in exile, unhappy with the way his home country had treated him after his controversial paintings of some Hindu deities released.

 He was born on September 17, 1915 in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. MF Hussain did his schooling from Indore. In 1935, MF Husain moved to Bombay and joined Sir J. J. School of Art. He started off by painting cinema hoardings.

Then In late 1940’s he became well known as an artist then in 1947 he joined the Progressive artists group which encouraged Indian artist to go internationally.

In 1952, finally he got his solo exhibition and displayed his painting in Zurich, Switzerland. Then in 1955 he was honoured Padma Shree award by the Government of India.

Hussain was famously known for his Shwetambari exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai which consisted of two halls masked with barren white cloth, coils of which embraced the floor with torn newspapers.

MF Husain first came under the controversy after his first alleged anti-Hindu artwork published in 1996 he had depicted Hindu deities, nude, was canvassed in the 70s. After it was published, the dispute over Free expression versus Hurting Hindu sentiments; forced the fanatics to threaten his life. 

Yet again, in 2006 he was charged with hurting sentiments of people because of his controversial painting Bharatmata and since then Husain went in to exile.

After multiple controversies of his paintings being taken down from exhibitions, MF Husain was left alone with no choice but to leave the country. Later, he was honored with Qatar citizenship.
