The CSAT -2011 has been successfully conducted by the high profile Central Government recruiter of the India with the brand new pattern.

The UPSC had given the new flavor to the examination by adding the aptitude test. Over 4 lakh aspirants applied for the IAS, out of which around 11,000 will be selected for the mains.
Paper-I followed more or less the previous trend of UPSC PT, however number of question has been reduced to 100 from earlier 150.

Paper-II, the aptitude test paper, was the newly introduced paper had 80 questions from General Mental Ability, Comprehension, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Basic Numeracy, Decision-making and Problem-solving, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability.

The students finds themselves in tricky position as the negative marks has eroded their marks to significant level.

The choices of GS paper were quite close that led the commitment of error while handling the question.
Similar situation was in the Aptitude paper where students find themselves quite comfortable after the examination but post examination matching of answer slides them down.

So the cut-off for the CSAT-2011 will definitely come down substantially low about 45-50% combined.
Paper I= 45 %
Paper II=55%
Chances are strong, that cut off will be decided after combining the Paper I and Paper II.

Record Number of Absentees Seen in CSAT 2011, it will affect the Cut off

June 13: Almost 50% of the candidates who had applied for the examination had skipped the first Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT-2011) conducted by the UPSC on Sunday. The Commission has replaced preliminary exams with CSAT from this year onward to provide a level playing field for all candidates irrespective of their academic background.

The uncertainty surrounding the pattern of the CSAT is believed to be the prime cause for the massive absenteeism. The UPSC had not clarified the total number and type of questions that would be asked in the CSAT and several candidates thought this would affect their chances and so preferred to give the exam next year. “The questions in Paper I had a distinct flavor of testing the sensitivity of the candidate to the issues of the aam aadmi. Paper-II had a predominant emphasis on passages from the comprehension section. Answering them would require more than average levels of English. This would give an advantage to the urban educated English medium aspirant.

The new pattern also requires applicants to appear for two common papers in General Studies, instead of one optional of his/her choice and a compulsory GS paper. UPSC has not specified minimum marks for Paper I and II. There is no cut-off declared. UPSC may consider the grand total of the two papers for the cut-off.
