R. Raju's Letter to the Satyam Board

Jan 07, 2009 03:29 PM

Dear Board Members,

It is with deep regret, and tremendous burden that I am carrying on my conscience, that I would like to bring the following facts to your notice:

1. The Balance Sheet carries as of September 30, 2008:

a. Inflated (non-existent) cash and bank balances of Rs. 5,040 crore (as against Rs. 5361 crore reflected in the books)

b. An accrued interest of Rs. 376 crore which is non-existent

c. An understated liability of Rs. 1,230 crore on account of funds arranged by me

d. An over stated debtors position of Rs. 490 crore (as against Rs. 2651 reflected in the books)

2. For the September quarter (Q2) we reported a revenue of Rs.2,700 crore and an operating margin of Rs. 649 crore (24% of revenues) as against the actual revenues of Rs. 2,112 crore and an actual operating margin of Rs. 61 Crore ( 3% of revenues). This has resulted in artificial cash and bank balances going up by Rs. 588 crore in Q2 alone.

The gap in the Balance Sheet has arisen purely on account of inflated profits over a period of last several years (limited only to Satyam standalone, books of subsidiaries reflecting true performance). What started as a marginal gap between actual operating profit and the one reflected in the books of accounts continued to grow over the years. It has attained unmanageable proportions as the size of company operations grew significantly (annualized revenue run rate of Rs. 11,276 crore in the September quarter, 2008 and official reserves of Rs. 8,392 crore). The differential in the real profits and the one reflected in the books was further accentuated by the fact that the company had to carry additional resources and assets to justify higher level of operations-thereby significantly increasing the costs.

Every attempt made to eliminate the gap failed. As the promoters held a small percentage of equity, the concern was that poor performance would result in a take-over, thereby exposing the gap. It was like riding a tiger, not knowing how to get off without being eaten.

The aborted Maytas acquisition deal was the last attempt to fill the fictitious assets with real ones. Maytas’ investors were convinced that this is a good divestment opportunity and a strategic fit. Once Satyam’s problem was solved, it was hoped that Maytas’ payments can be delayed. But that was not to be. What followed in the last several days is common knowledge.

I would like the Board to know:

1. That neither myself, nor the Managing Director (including our spouses) sold any shares in the last eight years - excepting for a small proportion declared and sold for philanthropic purposes.

2. That in the last two years a net amount of Rs. 1,230 crore was arranged to Satyam (not reflected in the books of Satyam) to keep the operations going by resorting to pledging all the promoter shares and raising funds from known sources by giving all kinds of assurances (statement enclosed, only to the members of the board). Significant dividend payments,   acquisitions, capital expenditure to provide for growth did not help matters. Every attempt was made to keep the wheel moving and to ensure prompt payment of salaries to the associates. The last straw was the selling of most of the pledged share by the lenders on account of margin triggers.

3. That neither me, nor the Managing Director took even one rupee/dollar from the company and have not benefited in financial terms on account of the inflated results.

4. None of the board members, past or present, had any knowledge of the situation in which the company is placed. Even business leaders and senior executives in the company, such as, Ram Mynampati, Subu D, T.R. Anand, Keshab Panda, Virender Agarwal, A.S. Murthy, Hari Ty SV Knshnan, Vijay Prasad, Manish Mehta, Murali V, Sriram Papam, Kiran Kavale, Joe Lagioia,  Ravindra Penumetsa, Jayaraman and Prabhakar Gupta are unaware of the real situation as against the books of accounts. None of my or Managing Director’s immediate or extended family members has any idea about these issues.

Having put these facts before you, I leave it to the wisdom of the board to take the matters forward. However, I am also taking the liberty to recommend the following steps:

1. A Task Force has been formed in the last few days to address the situation arising out of the failed Maytas acquisition attempt. This consists of some of the most accomplished leaders of Satyam: Subu D, T.R. Anand, Keshab Panda and Virender Agarwal, representing business functions, and A.S. Murthy, Hari T and Murali V representing support functions. I suggest that Ram Mynampati be made the Chairman of this Task Force to immediately address some of the operational matters on hand. Ram can also act as an Interim CEO reporting to the board.

2. Merrill Lynch can be entrusted with the task of quickly exploring some Merger opportunities.

3. You may have a ‘restatement of accounts’ prepared by the auditors in light of the facts that I have placed before you.

I have promoted and have been associated with Satyam for well over twenty years now. I have seen it grow from few people to 53,000 people, with 185 Fortune 500 companies as customers and operations in 66 countries. Satyam has established an excellent leadership and competency base at all levels. I sincerely apologize to all Satyamites and stakeholders, who have made Satyam a special organization, for the current situation, I am confident they will stand by the company in this hour of crisis.

In light of the above, I fervently appeal to the board to hold together to take some important steps. Mr. T.R. Prasad is well placed to mobilize support from the government at this crucial time. With the hope that members of the Task Force and the financial advisor, Merrill Lynch (now Bank of America) will stand by the company at this crucial hour, I am marking copies of this statement to them as well.

Under the circumstances, I am tendering my resignation as the chairman of Satyam and shall continue in this position only till such time the current board is expanded. My continuance is just to ensure enhancement of the board over the next several days or as early as possible.

I am now prepared to subject myself to the laws of the land and face consequences thereof.

Role of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in Bihar

NABARD has a mandate for facilitating credit flow for development of agriculture, agroindustries, village and cottage industries, handicrafts and other rural crafts by providing refinance to lending institutions in rural areas. It also coordinates the operations of rural credit institutions and offers training and research facilities. In addition, it manages the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), created to compensate for the shortfall in commercial banks’ lending to strengthen rural infrastructure and to provide loans to state government for projects relating to irrigation, soil conservation, watershed management, drinking water supply, cold storage chains and other rural infrastructure projects.

Refinancing by NABARD has been continuously increasing and stood at Rs 826 crore at the end of 2009-10. Most of the financial support has been provided by way of RIDF loans,.

The new initiatives taken by NABARD during 2009-10 included the following:

• Promotion of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) Programme and System of Wheat Intensification Programme to increase production and productivity;

• Augmenting productivity of lead crops/activities through adoption of sustainable
agricultural practices.

• Promotion of loan based natural resources management activities with community
participation through Umbrella Programme on Natural Resource Management (UPNRM);

• 100 percent refinance to all agencies in Bihar for investment credit to increase ground level credit flow for agriculture;

• Implementation of six newly introduced Centally Sponsored Schemes under animal husbandry;

• Implementation of modified version (with changed mode from interest free loan to subsidy schemes) of venture capital fund in dairy schemes i.e. Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Schemes (DEDS);

• Pilot project on technology transfer, credit counselling and market advocacy through farmers' clubs;

• Intensification of promotion of Joint Liability Groups (JLG);

• Preparation for launching of Priyadarshini Programme in Sitamarhi and Madhubani districts; and

• Capital subsidy-cum-refinance scheme for installation of Solar Off-grid (Photo-voltaic and thermal) and decentralised applications under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission

Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF)

The RIDF was set up by the Government of India in 1995-96 for financing ongoing rural infrastructure projects. The fund is maintained by NABARD. Domestic commercial banks contribute to the fund to the extent of their shortfall in stipulated priority sector lending to agriculture. The main objective of the fund is to provide loans to state governments and stateowned corporations to enable them to complete ongoing rural infrastructure projects. Till the end of 2009-10, fifteen tranches (I to XV) of RIDF have been released covering total cumulative sanctions for Rs.1,03,718 crore for the entire country, out of which only Rs 68,440 crore (66percent) have been disbursed (Table 6.28). For Bihar, however, only Rs 1815 crore, or 47 percent of the total sanctions of Rs 3835 crore could be disbursed till March 2010.The scope of RIDF has been widened to include activities in agriculture and allied sectors including irrigation projects, rural connectivity (roads and bridges), social sector investments (rural health, education and drinking water), soil and water conservation, rain water harvesting etc.

Other activities include rural market yards, rural health centres and primary schools, mini hydel plants, shishu shiksha kendras, anganwadis, and system improvement in the power sector, flood protection, watershed development/reclamation of waterlogged areas, drainage, forest development, market yard/godown, apna mandi, rural haats and other marketing infrastructure, cold storage, seed/agriculture/ horticulture farms, plantation and horticulture, grading and certifying mechanisms such as testing and certifying laboratories, etc., community irrigation wells for irrigation purposes for the village as a whole, fishing harbour/jetties, riverine fisheries, animal husbandry and modern abattoir.

The total disbursements made by NABARD under the various tranches of the RIDF in Bihar is shown in Table 6.29. Only Rs 1242 crore out of total sanctioned amount of Rs 2899 crore, or 43 percent of the sanctioned amount have been disbursed till March 2009, leaving a huge shortfall between sanction and disbursement. By March 2010, the disbursements have marginally improved to 46.5 percent. Such shortfall in disbursements of RIDF funds as compared to sanctions has been a continuing feature and a matter of concern in the implementation of RIDF.

Massive Protest Seen Against Result of JPSC 4TH PT Examination

JPSC aspirants of Jharkhand civil service examination, who were protesting against the JPSC, were arrested  after the 14 hour of protest.

Students were found agressively protesting against the dismal list of  candidate who get through in 4th PT. In comparison to the BPSC, who has declared 15 thousand results against the 257 vacancies, recently published result is too small.

The most controversial state  Public Service Commission of India had declared the list of 10 thousand successful candidates  in its first PT examination against the 64 vacancies in first exam. Similarly, 17,000 and 21,000 students were declared passed in the 2nd and 3rd PT exam conducted by JPSC. The total numbers of vacancies were 172 and 143 in 2nd and 3rd PT exam conducted by the state commission respectively.

Recession Fear Looms over US Economy

New York, Aug, 27: A string retreat in recent data has increased the probability of a double-dip recession by 80 %, as per the modeling statistics by Bank of America Merrill Lynch that released on Wednesday, data accounted the toll the U.S. debt downgrade by S&P, Europe’s debt issues and stock market volatility.
To be sure, the economic team of Bank of America Merrill Lynch looking for more data is required for it to raise its overall official prediction of a recession. Still, the recent dismal number from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve and the University of Michigan were enough for Merrill to increase its overall probability of a contraction of economy in the next year to 40% from 35 % at the start of this month.

The widespread survey of manufacturing in the Philadelphia region taken toll to its lowest level since March 2009, as per the Fed data. Consumer confidence reading is at lowest level since May 1980, the survey released by Thomson Reuters/University Michigan on August 12.
The weekly jobless claims released Thursday unexpectedly increased to 417,000, above economists’ estimates and further validating the data from earlier in the month.

The Philly Fed had puts a recession probability by 85.7 %, while the consumer survey puts contraction chances at 80 %, as per the Bank of America's probability model, which uses a so-called Bayesian technique that “tests if the economy is in a recession based on the interaction of variables that are associated with turns in the business cycle.”

“More timely consumer and business sentiment indicators dropped in August in response to a range of bad news,” said Michael Hanson, one of the firm’s economists, in the note. “While we concede the risks are rising, a recession is not baked in the cake. If the economy can avoid further shocks, we would expect a modest bounce in growth into the end of the year.”

According to their reading, the Philly Fed has perfectly forecasted four of the last seven recessions. The older Michigan survey has precisely signaled three of the eight recessions in the past.

“It’s a 100 percent chance,” said Peter Schiff, CEO & Chief Global Strategist of Euro Pacific Capital. “In fact the recession might have already started.”

The Bank of America Merrill economics team is less pessimistic than Schiff and is quick to identify that since 1990, the Philly Fed has indicated recessions six times that have never come to fruition. Therefore, a sudden drop of this magnitude is not unusual for this indicator.
In another indicator is that the Fed has decided to keep interest rate low for the long time.

Anna Hazare Latter to PM

Dr Manmohan Singh,
Prime Minister of India,
7, Race Course Road,
New Delhi.

Dear Dr Manmohan Singh ji,

You are one of the most honest Prime Ministers that the country has had. It is ironical that your own government should seek to take the Prime Minister out of the purview of Lokpal’s investigations.

As of today, the Prime Minister is covered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Under that law, any allegation of corruption against a Prime Minister can be investigated. No exception has been made for either the Prime Minister or any of his activities (like external affairs, defence etc). Every activity of the Prime Minister can be investigated under Prevention of Corruption Act.

However, as of today, the investigations are done by CBI, which is directly under the control of the Prime Minister himself. The only change that we are proposing in the present system is that rather than being investigated by an agency directly under his own control, let the PM be investigated by an agency which is independent, like the Lokpal. We are not proposing any other change.

The five ministers, who are members of the drafting committee, unanimously feel that the Prime Minister should be kept out of Lokpal’s investigations. The Constitution of India does not grant any such immunity to the Prime Minister. Only President has been granted immunity from any investigations and trials.

So, in order to take the PM out of Lokpal’s ambit or even to take some part of his jurisdiction out of the ambit of Lokpal’s investigations, the government would need to amend the Constitution and the Prevention of Corruption Act and grant him immunity similar to that enjoyed by the President. Is the government planning to do that? Why?

We thought we would get a better and stronger anti-corruption regime under your tenure. On the contrary, the government seems to be shrinking the scope of anti-corruption regime. Taking the Prime Minister out of any probe would be a retrograde step.

Government’s stand is that a Prime Minister under scanner would become “dysfunctional”. Do you really feel so? You have worked with both Mr Rajiv Gandhi and Mr Narasimha Rao. Did you get a feeling that Mr Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, become “dysfunctional” due to Bofors probe? Or did Mr P V Narasimha Rao become “dysfunctional” due to probe in Jharkhand Mukti Morcha case?

The Prime Minister is privy to a lot of security related sensitive information. Suppose tomorrow, a corrupt person like Madhu Koda or A Raja or any of the Reddy Brothers became Prime Minister. Don’t you feel that the security of the country itself would be seriously compromised if Prime Minister enjoyed complete immunity from any investigations and trials? There is no civilised country that we are aware of where the head of government is immune from corruption investigations.

We remember that in the past, you had yourself offered to be brought under the purview of Lokpal Bill. Then why are your own ministers opposing your inclusion in Lokpal’s ambit? Is there a disconnect or communication gap within the government?

Interestingly, three out of the five ministers, who are members of the joint drafting committee, have themselves advocated inclusion of the Prime Minister in Lokpal Bill on earlier occasions.

Shri Pranab Mukherjee, as the Chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on Lokpal Bill in 2001 under NDA regime, had himself recommended that Prime Minister should be covered under the ambit of Lokpal. The then Prime Minister Sh Atal Bihari Vajpayee agreed to that recommendation.

Later in January 2011, Mr Moily, Law Minister in the present government, suggested inclusion of Prime Minister in Lokpal’s purview in the draft law prepared by him. This draft law was sent to the home ministry under Mr Chidambaram, which also concurred with this view in its comments made in March 2011.

So, it appears that in the last ten years from the year 2001 upto March 2011, the government’s view has been that the Prime Minister should be brought within the purview of Lokpal. Now, all the three ministers have suddenly taken a U-turn and they appear to be adamant on keeping the PMO out of Lokpal’s ambit.

We are wondering what happened post March 2011, which prompted the government to suddenly take a U-turn on this issue?

Till now the Prime Minister could be investigated by CBI. Why should an honest Prime Minister like you be scared of being investigated by an independent Lokpal?

We would be grateful if you could kindly clarify government’s position in this regard.
With warm regards
Yours sincerely,
K.B. Hazare, Shanti Bhusan, Justice Santosh Hegde, Prashant Bhusan, Arvind Kejriwal

Rajdeep Sardesai's open letter to Anna Hazare

Dear Anna,

I write this to you neither as a fawning cheerleader nor a cynical journalist, but rather as a proud Indian like you. Let me applaud you at the very outset for having brought the issue of corruption to the national centrestage. You have worked tirelessly for more than two decades in exposing corruption in Maharashtra but Ralegan Siddhi is a long way from Delhi which is perhaps why television channels hadn't featured your contribution prominently till now. An opinion poll we did just a month ago suggested that more people had heard of yoga guru Baba Ramdev than a tireless fakir-like crusader from a Western Maharashtra village.

All that has now changed. Your latest fast has made you a household name. You've brought the mighty Indian state to its knees. You've encouraged millions of anonymous Indians to come out on the streets and get a voice. You've exposed a political class, suffering from a grave moral crisis, to the wider world. You've empowered those who've felt lost in a new India where wealth is the sole presiding deity. You've become a symbol of change and hope at a time when a scam culture has assaulted the conscience of the nation. You've even shown that the Marathas, a community that has failed to conquer Delhi since losing the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, can indeed take the national capital by storm. But in every battle there must come a time when you must call a halt. That time may well be approaching.

Gandhi, the greatest Indian of them all, from whom you claim to derive your inspiration, never went on a fast unto death by refusing medication. For Gandhi, the idea of fasting was a form of self-purification, a fast could not be undertaken, as he said, "out of anger. Anger is a short-term madness." Yes, there is anger on the streets today, an almost volcanic eruption of the lava that has been simmering for decades. Your genius lies in being able to channel that popular anger against corruption into a well-defined goal of a strong anti-corruption law and, importantly, doing so in a peaceful manner. The real danger though now is that a peaceful, non-violent movement runs the risk of being overwhelmed by what Dr Ambedkar, the great constitutionalist, described a fast unto death as, by the "grammar of anarchy."

There have been some signs of this in the last 48 hours that are truly worrying. The gherao of the homes of Members of Parliament may be visually appealing, but it encourages an anti-politician 'sab neta chor hai' rhetoric that could further destroy faith in parliamentary democracy. The increasingly strident language being used by certain members of Team Anna - a term which creates the regrettable impression of you being surrounded by a coterie - is to be best avoided at a time when a rational dialogue is called for.

Only two days ago, a colleague of mine was assaulted in the heart of the capital by a drunk biker gang waving the Tricolour and chanting 'I am Anna' slogans. The frenzy being built up in the media by hyper-ventilating news channels and demagogic acolytes could easily transform a genuine people's movement into a lumpen expression of mob fury. It's a transformation that could end up destroying the hard-earned credibility of your struggle.

Ram Lila is not Mumbai's Azad Maidan nor is it the village square in Ralegan Siddhi. This is not some battle to stop the local thug from shutting his liquor shop. Here, there are multiple agendas that require dexterous negotiation and not mere sloganeering. The sight of gangster Abu Salem's girlfriend Monica Bedi parading Mumbai's streets with an Anna cap should convince you of the dangers of reducing the fight against corruption to a well-choreographed prime time TV spectacle.

It is true no fast can be called off till the primary goal has been achieved. If that goal is to have the Jan Lok Pal bill passed exactly as you desire then that is a maximalist position which is never easy to accommodate overnight. Gandhi himself often spoke of the 'beauty' of compromise. Without doubt the fact that you have forced an obdurate government to fast-forward the Lok Pal Bill and accept most of your proposals is itself a major achievement. But to ram through a Bill that has been hanging fire for decades within the space of a few days without a sustained and truly inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders would be self-defeating.

Yes, one recognizes you have little trust in a discredited government that only ten days ago, arrogantly and foolishly, first defamed, then arrested you and now salutes you. A flip-flop government sorely missing a strong political authority has taken refuge in parliamentary procedure when the simpler way out to atone for their sins would have been an unqualified apology for your arrest followed by a withdrawal of the government Bill and a fresh start to the pre-legislation consultation. Yes, you are hurt, and rightly so, by the government's attitude, but this is the moment to show your heart is much bigger than the petty minds who reside in official bungalows. It's time for practicality, not prestige. Why not, for example, get the government to commit to a special session of Parliament in six to eight weeks on an amended Lok Pal Bill so that a new, well-considered law becomes a Diwali gift to the nation?

Post-script: I have framed a picture of our meeting earlier this week. The caption reads: "When zero met hero!". India is not Anna, nor is Anna India, but you are now an icon for millions. Please don't allow a personality cult to shadow your ultimate gift of common sense.

Hewlett-Packard's TouchPad tablet Best Buy

Hewlett-Packard's new innovative TouchPad tablet due to his price and  features has emerged as  an instant hit at Best Buy and Amazon despite being discontinued in the wake of Hewlett-Packard''s shuttering of its WebOS device business. And HP is responding by shipping more from its warehouses now a days.

It's all about amaging price that given by HP to this product. On Friday, the company slashed the price to $100 from $399 for the 16GB model and to $150 from $499 for the 32GB version. This ignited a buying frenzy and the tablet subsequently flew off the shelves and out of the warehouses, selling out at many locations over the weekend.

Select Best Buy stores added further energy to the fire by deciding at the last minute Saturday night to unload their inventory at the discounted prices on Sunday, instead of sending unsold stock back to HP.

All of this has driven the HP TouchPad to the top of best-seller lists at Best Buy and Amazon.

And HP is agressive by releasing more TouchPads in coming days, according to a tweet from HP's Bryna Corcoran. "Regarding 'next batch' coming in...it's called a warehouse. No more being made, but have inventory coming from ones already manufactured."

HP Touch pad still available at some online resellers at prices that are closer to the pre-fire-sale pricing. This list of resellers on Amazon's site claiming that they  have stock, with prices ranging from $300 to over $500.
Calls to two Best Buy stores in California and one in Pennsylvania also saying that two of the stores had lines outside before the stores opened on Sunday.

7 Wonders Of The Ancient World

7 Wonders Of The Ancient World – Multiple lists of the Wonders of the World have been prepared from antiquity to the current time, to catalogue the world’s most spectacular natural wonders and manmade structures.

The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World is the first known list of the most remarkable creations of classical antiquity, and was based on guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. The number seven was chosen because the Greeks believed it to be the representation of perfection and plenty. Many similar lists have been made.

World wonder s

The great Colosseum, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu are world-famous ancient architectural marvel wonders; however they’re hardly the only man-made structures worthy of effusive praise, enthusiastic photography and economy-stimulating tourism. These 7 historical sites, ranging from an incredibly deep well in India to the cradle of Mayan civilization – complete with the world’s first highway system – are often overlooked, but represent some of the most jaw-dropping and mysterious engineering feats from ancient times to the medieval period.

Perhaps one of the most mesmerizing examples of patterns in architecture, the 10th century Chand Baori well state of Rajasthan in the Indian is the world’s deepest, extending 100 feet below the surface of the earth. Built as a solution to chronic water supply issues in this dry and arid region, the well has a total of 3,500 steps in 13 levels arranged in an inverted ‘V’ shape and is adjacent to the Harshat Mata temple. The walls are so steep that when standing at the bottom, you sometimes can’t see people who are on the steps above you.

This is difficult to imagine the process of construction for such a complex stone structure with the technological condition at the time. Local legend has it that ghosts built it in a single night; perhaps that accounts for its preternaturally preserved state as well.

How did the Incas move these massive stones? That’s just one of the mysteries surrounding Sacsayhuaman, an immense fortress located on the outskirts of the city of Cusco in Peru. While the much more famous Machu Picchu is renowned for its views, Sacsayhuaman is a marvel of engineering, confounding Spanish conquerors who were so amazed by the construction; they thought it must be the work of demons. The largest of the boulders that make up the three dry stone walls of Sacsayhuaman – all carried from a quarry located over three kilometers away – weighs an estimated 120 tons. But the seemingly superhuman feat of moving these boulders is not the most incredible aspect of the ruins: even thousands of years later, the stones of the walls fit together with such precision, you can’t fit a piece of paper between them. This precision, along with the various stone shapes that fit together like a puzzle, is likely the reason that the structure has survived earthquakes that have devastated the area.

The largest carved stone Buddha in the world towers over 232 feet into the air, with fingers measuring 11 feet in length and 92-foot-long shoulders big enough to be basketball courts. Leshan Giant Buddha overlooks the confluence of three rivers in the Sichuan Province of China. Begun during the Tang Dynasty in the year 713, the Buddha was built at the behest of a monk called Hai Tong who hoped to supplicate the temperamental water spirits thought to be responsible for numerous boat accidents. It took thousands of workers more than 90 years to complete the project. Seemingly cosmetic details are even more complex and meaningful than they look upon first glance. For example, the 1,021 buns in the Buddha’s coiled hair are part of drainage system that continues behind the ears, in the clothing and along the limbs, protecting the statue from water-related damage.

A massive urban complex laid out to celestial, geographic and geodetic alignments, the Teotihuacan archaeological site in the Basin of Mexico contains some of the largest pyramidal structures built in the pre-Columbian Americas. The city was established around 100 BCE and may have had as many as 200,000 inhabitants during its prime in 450 CE. It has been called the first true urban center in the Americas; its remains measure at least two miles across but the city was likely much larger and its influence extended as far away as Guatemala. Very little is known of the Teotihuacan people or what may have caused the city’s decline, which occurred in the 8th or 9th century. An astronomer-anthropologist named Anthony Aveni discovered that the grid of the city was based on a point of prime astronomical significance. The builders seem to have aligned the east-west axis of the city to the point on the horizon at which the sun sets on August 12th, the anniversary of the beginning of the current Mesoamerican calender cycle. Strangely, thick sheets of shimmery mica were found within the tiers of the Pyramid of the Sun. Hidden between layers of stone, the mica clearly wasn’t decorative; today it is used as an insulator in electronics but it seems unlikely that these ancient people understood such properties. Furthermore, the particular type of mica used in the complex was reportedly traced to Brazil, nearly 2000 miles away. The Pyramid of the Sun has never been fully excavated.

The tiny town of Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s holiest cities, is home to 11 monolithic churches – all carved from the same block of red volcanic rock, with their roofs at ground level. Likely built during the 12th and 13th centuries, the rock-hewn churches include four that are fully free-standing, with the rest either partially attached at the sides to the rock or with ‘liberated’ facades. They’re connected to each other with a maze of underground tunnels, and their construction was engineered to take advantage of natural aquifers deep in the ground.

The 500,000-acre site of El Mirador in Guatemala is referred to as ‘the cradle of Maya civilization’ and contains not only five Preclassic Maya cities that pre-date the far more famous Tikal by at least 1,000 years, but also the world’s largest pyramid by volume and the remains of the world’s first highway system. A remote site located deep in the jungle, El Mirador was’t ‘discovered’ until 1926, and wasn’t mapped until 1978. The civic center of the site measures about 10 square miles and contains around 35 ‘triadic’ structures, with ‘La Danta’ being the most notable at 230 feet tall. Its volume, 2,800,000 cubic meters, rivals that of far more well-known ancient pyramids around the world including those in Egypt. El Mirador is also home to a complex network of large roads, which once linked important architectural compounds and nearby cities. The 500,000-acre site of El Mirador is threatened by looters, drug traffickers and deforestation, prompting the creation of a 810,000-acre national park in the region, which is currently being established by the Global Heritage Fund and the Guatemalan and U.S. governments.

4,500 years ago, Mohenjo-Daro was one of the largest early urban settlements in the world. It thrived for over a thousand years, but was completely forgotten until excavation revealed its ruins along the Indus River floodplain of what is now Pakistan in 1921. Abandoned around 1500 BCE for reasons unknown, Mohenjo-Daro has a planned layout based on a street grid of buildings made of mortared brick and likely housed around 35,000 residents. Among many interesting features, what stands out the most about Mohenjo-Daro is plumbing and sewage system that was more sophisticated than what most Western households had until the 20th century. Not only did some home have indoor toilets, but there were actually sewage drains that ran below the streets.

Mount Kilimanjaro, is Voted Among top 10 Tourist Spot

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (eTN) - Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, is voted among top 10   tourist spot and nominated as place for the 7 natural wonders of the world.

Mount Kilimanjaro was listed in a voting campaign which was conducted by an organization known as Seven Natural Wonders in which tourist attractions from across the world are voted to be nominated as the Seven Natural Wonders of The World.

Amongst the 28 contestants which have made it to this stage, only 2 nominations are from Africa, these being Mt. Kilimanjaro and famous  Table Mountain , with tough competition between the 2 African destinations.

It has been anticipated that Tanzania will gain much from the listing of Mount Kilimanjaro in the new list of Seven Natural Wonders of the World and will be able to demonstrate this opportunity to promote Mt. Kilimanjaro as being in Tanzania.

Voting trends have reflected that most people who are voting for Mount Kilimanjaro are foreign holidaymakers and other mountain friends, as compared to Table Mountain which had attracted a good number of South African voters.

Responding to this competition, the Tanzania Tourist Board requested Tanzanians friends of Mount Kilimanjaro, patrons, and holidaymakers across the world to vote for Mount Kilimanjaro into one of the New Seven Natural Wonders Of The World.

Voting is still running  and continue until 11th November  2011 when a finalist will be decleared by the New7Wonders (N7W).
Other nominees are mostly the world's renowned natural features, are the Amazon rainforest in South America; Black Forest in Germany; the Dead Sea in Israel, Jordan, and Palestine; the Great Barrier Reef Australia; Jeju Island, Korea (South); and the Maldives.

Other fascinating tourist-pulling natural features listed for voting are PP Underground River Philippines, Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Australia, and Vesuvius volcano in Italy.

Mount Kilimanjaro is  leading tourist hotspot of Tanzania's, pulling crowds of holidaymakers every year, including prominent business personalities and celebrities from all corners of the world.

Arundhati Roy Slams Anna Team

NEW DELHI:  Arundhati Roy a Booker prize-winning author launched a scathing attack on the "aggressive nationalism" behind the anti-corruption drive led by Gandhian leader Anna Hazare.

In a column entitled "I'd rather not be Anna" published in a newspaper, the novelist, essayist and rights activist condemned both the style and substance of Hazare's campaign that has mobilised public opinion in India.

In particular she questioned Hazare's use of the hunger strike and other tactics and symbols co-opted from his hero -- Mahatma Gandhi.

"While his means may be Gandhian, Anna Hazare's demands are certainly not," Roy said.

The focus of Hazare's protest is a new anti-corruption bill.

The 74-year-old activist Anna Hazare says the current draft is too weak and wants parliament to pass his own version which gives more scope and power to an ombudsman who would monitor politicians, bureaucrats and the judiciary.

While agreeing that the government bill was so flawed "that it was impossible to take seriously", Roy said Gandhi would have been dismayed by Hazare's vision of an all-powerful, centralised ombudsman.

"It will function as an independent administration, meant to counter the bloated, unaccountable, corrupt one that we already have. Two oligarchies instead of one," Roy said.

Hazare, who has not eaten for six days and took his fast public on Friday, has drawn huge crowds to the open air venue where he is staging his hunger strike in Delhi.

The atmosphere is one of celebratory protest, with the crowds singing along to patriotic songs and waving the Indian national flag.

But Roy, a vocal government critic, said she was dismayed by "the props and the choreography, the aggressive nationalism" of the Hazare movement.

"They signal to us that if we do not support the fast, we are not 'true Indians'," she said.
