It was always thought that Union Public Service Commission was always one step ahead of the candidates and coaching classes but today I have to admit it’s many steps ahead by keeping its credential as Unpredictable Public Service Commission by enlarge. What CSAT- 2011 proved is that one can no longer take something for granted or try to forecast a pattern to the first eliminator round. Because the brand new CSAT syllabus has been set in such a tricky way that the apex recruitment body of central government can tweak the CSAT paper and pattern in any way that they want ti maintain the unpredictability. This is just what happened in CSAT-2011.
After looking at Paper 1 of CSAT- 2011 the first question that comes to mind is where are the current affairs questions? Every year most of the applicants, including experienced veterans, rely substantially over the current affairs to see them though in GS ,however in 2011 the current affairs questions were almost ignored except for a few like Budget 2011 and START Treaty. Otherwise there were not a single questions on current events was asked in CSAT 2011.The CSAT-2011 Paper 1 predominantly sailed through the unexplored proposition.
The second thing should be must noticed in CSAT-2011 is the number of Ecology, Environment-conservation and governence related questions. Climate change, global warming, bio diversity, ecology and environment are very important issues and commission has seen asking quite a few questions related to these issues in GS Mains in the past. But UPSC has set a new record for itself by asking nearly 20-25 questions in CSAT 2011 from this zone is the reflection of paradigm shift. In reality the entire CSAT pattern went for a toss as there was no Map-based questions asked and participants had to really know something about environment and ecology to score in Paper 1 of CSAT-2011
Environment and Ecology has become an important Key word:
Commission has shown that mix and match is going to be on the centre stage in IAS examination especially in the first eliminator called CSAT from now on. Their is the strong possibility that this year they completely ignored current events, but in next year’s CSAT it will dominate with current affairs questions to the total exclusion of environment based questions. The overall comprehensive coverage has to be the mantra in CSAT by counting the unpredictability of UPSC. Not selective approach should be taken at least for CSAT, because it would be suicidal attempt.
